Take Me To Church – Piano / Vocal Hozier Cover ft. Morgan James

My lover’s got humour He’s the giggle at a funeral Knows everybody’s disapproval I should’ve worshipped him sooner If the heavens ever did speak He’s the last pure mouthpiece Every Sunday’s getting more bleak A new poison every week “We were born sick” I heard them say it My church offers no absolutes He says “worship in the bedroom” The only heaven I’ll be sent to Is when I’m alone with you I was born sick But I love it Command me to be well Amen Amen Amen Take me to church I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies I’ll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife Offer me that deathless death Good God, let me give you my life Take me to church I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies I’ll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife Offer me that deathless death Good God, let me give you my life If I’m a pagan of the good times My lover’s the sunlight To keep the god on my side He demands a sacrifice To Drain the whole sea Get something shiny Something meaty for the main course That’s a fine looking high horse What you got in the stable? We’ve got of starving faithful That looks tasty That looks plenty This is hungry work Take me to church I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies I’ll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife Offer me that deathless death Good God, let me give you my life Take me to church at the shrine of your lies I’ll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife Offer me that deathless death Good God, let me give you my life No masters or kings when the ritual begins There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin In the madness and soil of that sad earthly scene Only then I am human Only then I am clean Take me to church I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies I’ll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife Offer me that deathless death Good God, let me give you my life Take me to church at the shrine of your lies Ohh you can sharpen your knife Offer me that deathless death Good God, let me give you my life Amen Amen Amen Amen Amen Amen Amen Amen

  1. Sorry for the English, but I'm using google translate.

I'm Brazilian and I wanted to say that I simply LOVE their arrangements.

and Morgan James is the best.

    Congratulations on your talent.

    I'm tired of listening

  2. You know you've done a good job when someone doesn't particularly like the original but likes this version!

  3. So hyped…

  4. I keep coming back to this video, and all I can say is, "Scott, perhaps you could look somewhat more impressed on occasion." Just wow.

  5. I have no idea how such a voice comes from such a slender frame. No idea at all. Voodoo. It must be voodoo.

  6. The pain of not being "normal". Tragic but delivered with gentle beauty. Imagine your love being ostracised?

  7. End of the day guys, love is love, you can talk about your god not agreeing with this and that, love is love. End of <3

  8. She’s got a gorgeous voice and it was really beautiful and all but the mess ups in the lyrics were really distracting lmao

  9. Wow – just wow – this lady rings my bell. Can't remember being this moved by a song I'd never heard before.

Time we ditched the 'industry' who thwart this kind of talent in favour of their big $elling 'products'.

  10. The pianist is looking up and adjusting his playing to her subtle voice changes….these two are so in sync it is flawless….

  11. She deserve to be a superstar. She must be one of the best female singers i the world, and still it´s a lot of extremely good singers out there. I´m stunned by hearing Morgan James singing "Take me to the church". Don´t forget to listen to her own "Reckless abandon" and "you never lied"

  12. 🙂 It's not about two gay guys. It's not about a straight couple. It's not about any specific relationship. Let's set the Music Video aside for a moment…just like taking training wheels off a bike. And let's listen to the lyrics. Because at its core, this song can be applied to ANYONE – and a singer can change the pronouns to suit their tastes.

Take me to church, I will worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
(Church is the bedroom in this song. The lyrics tell you to worship in the bedroom. Think of lies like foreplay or makeup [the falsehoods of seduction] – but that's a bit oversimplistic. Suffice it to say, the singer will worship ANYthing that comes out of their love's mouth. Like a dog…lapping at it])
I will tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife.
(I can tell you the things that turn me on. My kinks. A sharpening knife is an allusion to a hardening ehem but we can literally apply this to any sort of sex drive that is being stimulated. They are about to worship)
Offer me that deathless death, good god, let me give you my life.
    (Orgasm. Should go without saying.)

Apply this to the entire song. Writing a song about sex is one of the oldest ways to write a song…and the writer actually did a really good job with the imagery here. Of course, this is just one interpretation/analysis, but it is the most bare-bones one.

Here's a more subjective analysis on my part: This is a song about lovers that find themselves in that unfortunate position of being made to feel like their love is wrong. And that can happen to anyone. The singer's ultimate belief is that none of it matters – the only thing that matters, here and now, is the passion and pleasure – sacrificing everything else – and damning the consequences.

  13. Got this linked to me by someone that I had a wonderful, but forbidden, night with!
It was several years ago and for the most part it's me that send "inapropriate" messages to her, sometimes when I drink.
Not innapropriate in any other sense than to tell how I still feel about her 😉 She never replies, but I have Always felt that she feels the same, but she is much smarter than me, it would be almost impossible for us to pursue something without great consequenses 🙁
So needless to say I love this song now! 🙂

  14. She's normally great but that was a little pitchy!! …sorry people, don't hate!! …a few notes there made me cringe!! …I know she can do it better …and so does she!!

  15. I know I sound like an ass but it's easy to be taken by her beauty because she is so beautiful but I was listening to the audio while working at my desk without watching the video and could not help but notice these few faulty notes. I've seen her NY versions which are way better so please Morgan James and her fans don't hate me!! I still think you're amazing …and so beautiful!!!

  16. Best song about a dude blowing a dude I know of… I wish I could find a women that loves sucking dong as much as the dude in this song.

  17. well darling, that did it, I guess I needed a good cry, you always get me to that Sarah Vaughn chill tears, but, … what can I say, thanks sweetheart, and that piano guy

  18. This is truly one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard. I have listened to it a half dozen times in the past few days and it still brings me to tears. I am a 57 year old, battle hardened retired military veteran, I have seen some shit, and this, this does it to me. Well done Ms. James. I feel the pain emoting from your vocals and it eats my soul, in a beautiful way. God bless. Thank you.

  19. OMG .. the goosebumps just come in waves of incredible pleasure. Listening to this incredible chanteuse is pure ecstacy and a very spiritual experience. What a
    performance, including the pianist.

  20. Can someone explain to me how the original song was about a forbidden gay love? I agree with Morgan James that switching the pronouns will make it work as one, but the original song is a man using she/her to describe his lover.

  21. It is now 2018, and 2015 as you were interpreting this song it was the in the most miserable time of my life. You were interpreting this song so tense and for my feeling with so much anger and so beautiful. It is now three years, many things are happening but you stay for me the Lady with the best voice.

  22. Utterly beautiful. I love Hozier singing this but her voice is so clear and pure that I can't do anything but love this version

  23. Morgan James : One of the supreme singers on postmodern jukebox. on this one , she again put more power and emotion in her voice that I thought was possible . and as a thoroughly devout old male , white ; I remember now at 73 why I always fell in love with blondes. it's 2019 September and I can't wait to get a little extra cash to go see postmodern jukebox live somewhere down here in Florida.
