Freedom bell leaving First Baptist Church for D.C.


TODAY IS A HISTORIC DAY FOR A CHURCH — IN WILLIAMSBURG. THE FREEDOM BELL FROM THE OLDEST AFRICAN AMERICAN CHURCH IN THE COUNTRY IS HEADED TO WASHINGTON D.C.. THE BELL ONCE SAT IN THE HISTORIC FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH BUT IT’S BEING MOVED TO IT’S NEW HOME AT THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY AND CULTURE. THE BELL ITSELF HAS BEEN WITH THE CHURCH FOR 130 YEARS. 10 ON YOUR SIDE’S LEX GRAY IS LIVE IN WILLIAMSBURG FOR TODAY’S CEREMONY. LEX? DON AND STEPHANIE — THE BELL IS NOW ON ITS WAY TO WASHINGTON, D.C. BUT WE CAN SHOW YOU HOW WORKERS CAREFULLY REMOVED IT FROM THE CHURCH TOWER THIS MORNING. THE FREEDOM BELL WEIGHS SOMEWHERE AROUND 500 POUNDS — ACCORDING TO COLONIAL WILLIAMBSURG HISTORIANS. IT WAS RUNG IN FEBRUARY FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE SURE CREWS DON’T UNDO ANY OF THAT RESTORATION WORK. THIS CONGREGATION IS THE OLDEST IN THE COUNTRY TO BE FOUNDED BY FREE AND ENSLAVED AFRICAN AMERICANS. THAT WAS IN 1776 — AND THE CHURCH OBTAINED THE BELL IN THE LATE 1800S. THE CONGREGATION AND HISTORIANS HOPE THAT PRESIDENT OBAMA WILL RING IT AT THE OPENING CEREMONY OF A BLACK HISTORY AND CULTURE MUSEUM IN DC.
